Alcott
the song across the wind
A wandering traveler with no particular destination in mind. He is accustomed to solitude, lacking social skills and often disregarding others. He much prefers the peace of silence over the liveliness of chatter. Despite his cold demeanor, Alcott cares deeply about the few he calls his friends, and can be a gentle soul once you get to know him.
Leon
Shepherd to the stars
A traveler whose unparalleled healing and nature-related abilities earned him high honors in his time as a student. His vigilante deeds across the star had attracted the attention of the former Azem, who then nominated him to become her successor.
As the second youngest member of the Convocation, he feels immense pressure to live up to his title—from not just his peers, but also himself.
appearance
Sporting a muscular build and standing at a height that allows him to tower over most, Leon has a formidable presence. He has tan skin and blue eyes reminiscent of the ocean. His unkempt dark brown hair extends to his upper back and covers most of his face.Preferring not to stand out, he is seldom seen wearing anything other than the standard black Amaurotine robe. Outside of Convocation duties, he wears a civilian mask in order to hide his status.
personality
Quiet and unassuming by nature, his personality is a stark contrast to the image imposed on him by the reputation he has earned—he has been labelled a saint, a madman, a troublemaker, and many more. He would not consider himself to fit any of these titles, and while they are inaccurate, they are not completely baseless. He is highly intelligent and knowledgeable in his fields, utilizing his abilities to achieve the most effective but peaceful solutions to problems. Despite this, he often finds himself in all sorts of trouble (mostly on accident), earning him his reputation as a troublemaker. On a first impression, he may have a rather intimidating aura, but he is a kind soul whose selflessness knows no bounds. A gentle soul, he is extremely hard to anger, but easy to fluster. He is a man of few words, and, despite his bravery in other aspects, is horribly shy and unskilled at conversation. His inability to properly express his feelings gives the impression that he is cold and aloof, but in reality, he is deeply emotional, touched by even the smallest of gestures. Despite appearances, he also bears a rather bizarre sense of humor that only those close to him know of. As a foreigner to Amaurot, his grasp of social norms is a bit clumsy, and while he attempts to fit in, he often ends up standing out even more.Modest to a fault, he refuses to acknowledge his talents or take pride in his achievements. He holds little regard for his own wellbeing, and his immensely self-sacrificial nature, while earning him respect, also unnerves those around him, leading some to label him as rash. Deep-seated insecurities and a low sense of self worth often cause him to doubt his own abilities, and at times, whether he is truly fit for his title. Despite his rather meek nature, however, he strongly believes in his ideals and will fight for what he believes is right, preferring to act on his own if it allows him to achieve his goals.Specializing in healing and nature magic, he prefers to help rather than hurt, often putting himself at great risk in order to prevent others from coming to harm—to a frightening degree. However, beneath his kind nature lies a frightening martial prowess, accompanied by his ability to manipulate nature. He is well trained in combat, though he is only willing to use violence as a last resort.
background
Leon is native to a foreign region far from Amaurot. He came from humble origins—a small village that specialized in agriculture. Nature abilities were not an uncommon phenomenon in his village, and such abilities were considered a blessing sacred to their people. When the village's future is threatened by an unknown phenomenon, a young Leon takes it upon himself to find a solution. His abilities and aptitude for learning attract the attention of Convocation officials that come to deal business, who suggest that he will be able to take his abilities to greater heights outside of his village. He leaves his home as a teenager to attend the finest Akadaemia in Amaurot, in hopes that he will save his people. While struggling to assimilate into Amaurotine society, Leon devotes himself entirely to his research and studies. In his time as a student, he meets Hythlodaeus and Hades, who become his dear friends for life. A promising student, his work is highly praised and he is put in a sort of unwanted spotlight, with the expectation that he will go on to become someone of high status or perhaps even one day take on the mantle of Halmarut.Upon completing his studies, he embarks on a trip to his home for the first time in years. However, things do not go as planned, and Leon finds himself at a standstill, suddenly devoid of purpose after what he had devoted his entire life to ends in failure. His spirit broken and filled with shame, he is unwilling to return to either his homeland or Amaurot, beginning his self-imposed exile.
Leon wanders the star, with no particular goal or destination in mind. At his lowest, he comes to the conclusion that the only path left to him is to return to the star, but is unable to commit to it. Not quite wanting to die but having no other goal in mind, he finds himself helping people all throughout the star. Putting the knowledge and abilities he had worked so hard to cultivate to use, he never turns down a cry for help, offering his aid where the Convocation wouldn't. He adopts a new identity, driven by guilt and a need to escape his past. Such deeds earn him a vigilante reputation that catches the attention of Venat, who at the time held the seat of Azem. After finally meeting the mysterious figure she had heard of on her journeys across the star, she decides to take him under her wing, becoming not only a mentor to him, but also a parental figure. Under her guidance, he slowly regains his confidence and is able to face his past, but is still not quite ready to return to society. She eventually brings up the prospect of nominating him as her successor, which he quickly rejects. However, after some time, he decides to accept the offer, and for the first time in years, steps foot into Amaurot alongside her.
relationships
Emet-selch - A sort of older brother-like figure to Leon. He greatly respects Emet while regarding him as one of his dearest friends. Though Emet is often bothered by his friend’s antics, he is actually deeply concerned by the nature of his deeds, and, as the Keeper of the Underworld, does his best to ensure that he will never have to unexpectedly come across Leon’s soul in the Lifestream. He gives himself the responsibility of keeping Leon in check, and while he is often found scolding him for his rash behavior, Emet can never bring himself to ever truly be mad at him. He is even willing to shed his cold demeanor in order to offer what comfort he can when Leon needs it (to the best of his ability), as even he cannot bear to watch his friend suffer alone.Hythlodaeus - The first friend Leon makes in Amaurot. Hythlodaeus is one of his most trusted friends, and someone he does not hesitate to confide in. In Leon’s early years as a student, when Amaurot was still unknown to him, Hythlodaeus was a sort of anchor for him, someone he could trust and rely on in a sea of unfamiliar faces. Now, the two are nearly inseparable and are prone to getting into trouble together (much to the annoyance of Emet-selch, who often has to act as the voice of reason for them).
Hythlodaeus finds Leon endearing for a number of reasons, often taking it upon himself to keep his spirits high and keep him company. He admires his friend’s talent and passion for what he does, and vows to support him for as long as he remains on the star.Venat - Leon’s predecessor. His view of her borders on worship; to him, she is a mentor, a mother, and a savior. He deeply respects her and feels greatly indebted to her, believing that he would not have still been alive had he not met her, and her faith in him is what keeps him going. With Venat, he is able to be at his most vulnerable and share with her his most personal thoughts, trusting no one more than her. She is the first person he allows to really know him, to know all his flaws and deepest insecurities.
He never quite understands what it is that Venat sees in him—what makes her so sure that he is fit for his title. He tries his hardest to live up to (what he believes to be) her expectations, but never feels like he is enough. Despite the approval he has earned from both Venat and his peers, Leon cannot help but feel as though he is only riding on her coattails, and he cannot shake the feeling that he is disappointing her and his people.Themis - Leon’s junior in the Convocation, and more importantly, his partner. Though things between them were not very smooth at first, the two have become extremely close.
When Themis first joined the Convocation, his status as a prodigy and remarkable talent (along with the fact that he was slightly younger) had given Leon a crisis—a horrible affirmation that he was deeply inadequate and unfit for his position. Leon couldn’t help but envy him at times. What was worse was that for reasons Leon could not ever seem to understand, Themis admired him greatly and viewed him as one of his biggest inspirations. The sudden burden of having to fulfill his role as a proper role model and live up to the image the younger man had of him caused him great stress, and even led to him avoiding Themis whenever possible. However, after being brought together through shared assignments and getting to know each other better, the two are able to see past the images they had built of each other and learn to regard each other as equals.
They are generally very reserved in their relationship for a number of reasons, often acting professional even when they are alone, and seldom refer to each other by anything other than their titles. Due to their respective duties, the time they have to spend together is fleeting, and they cherish what little time they do have.
The true nature of their relationship is hidden from the rest of the Convocation. While such relationships between members are not forbidden, the nature of their respective titles would almost surely draw disapproval from the others. To the public eye, they are merely a pair of close friends who work incredibly well together.
miscellaneous
- Leon’s signature ability is to generate and manipulate plants. Most notable is the effect his emotions can have on nature. When experiencing intense joy, the nature around him flourishes. When feeling deep despair, the surrounding nature wilts. One of his signature quirks is spontaneously sprouting flowers out of thin air when he is incredibly flustered or happy.- Unskilled with words, his love language is gift-giving. He often produces flowers out of thin air to give as gifts. He also does this as a gesture of comfort or to alleviate people’s fear towards him (as he often appears intimidating to those who are unfamiliar with him).- He wishes he could be reborn as a cat once he returns to the star. Unfortunately for him, none of his shards end up being catlike (thanks, Venat).- While he is not one for conversation, there are two ways you can get him to talk uninhibited: alcohol, or simply bringing up a topic he is passionate about. He is always ready to divulge his vast amount of knowledge and share his passion with others.
